1.To familiarize with sonographic zonal anatomy and pathology of prostate.
2. To understand indications, principles, techniques and pitfalls of the procedure.
3. Brief review of the complications, patient care and discussion about alternate image guided modalities for biopsy
The educational exhibit attempts to revive and refresh the technique of TRUS guided prostate biopsy for the radiologists as increasing number are performed at the urologist office. The majority of prostate cancer arise in the peripheral zone( 70-80%), of the rest about 20% in the transitional zone and 10% in the central zone. Adequate sampling of these; with TRUS is key to high biopsy yield and low rate of complications. Different methodologies , complications and aftercare will be discussed.
Role of TRUS guided prostate biopsy is well established. Good patient preparation, correct biopsy technique and appropriate aftercare are essential for high yield and low complication rates. Other imaging modalities play role in guidance in select cases of rising PSA levels and negative TRUS biopsy.
