PURPOSE/AIM

1. To review the sonographic findings in pediatric breast abscess. 2. To gain an awareness of the risk factors associated with the development of breast infection in young patients. 3. To learn the optimal methods for management of pediatric breast abscess. 4. To review the technique used for percutaneous drainage in young patients.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

-Clinical Features of Breast Abscess     Age distribution     Location     Risk factors     Bimodal timing of symptoms     Presentation     Culture results  -Spectrum of Ultrasound Appearances     Complex vs. cystic mass     Thick rim     Doppler flow     Skin changes -Interventional Technique     Types of interventional techniques     Technique for ultrasound guided biopsy in pediatric age group     Correlation between interventional type and positive culture results

SUMMARY

The major teaching points of this exhibit are: Clinical presentation in pediatric breast abscess is variable. Diagnosis should be made by breast ultrasound which demonstrates characteristic findings. Optimal management for pediatric breast abscess is ultrasound guided aspiration. Ultrasound guided percutaneous aspiration has a higher yield for positive culture results allowing for targeted therapy.
