LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1) Apply the use of multiple distraction techniques to their own program in order to decrease the need for sedation/anesthesia in children undergoing MR Imaging. 2) Appreciate the advantages and importance of having a certified child life specialist on the pediatric imaging team.

ABSTRACT

In order to provide high quality MR images in children, sedation or anesthesia is frequently required. This process requires additional resources (MD’s, RN;s, PCA’s, space, etc.), adds additional charges to the family, and is not without complications. In addition, the total length of time that patient and family members are away from home/work/school is significantly increased if sedation/anesthesia is needed.   Therefore, when possible, the best choice is to obtain high quality images without the need for sedation or anesthesia. This presentation will describe a multifaceted program designed to decrease the need for sedation/anesthesia during MR imaging in the pediatric patient. The use of distraction devices, oral sucrose, infant immobilizer, and the integration of a child life specialist into the imaging team will be discussed.
