In the preface of his book “Classic descriptions in Diagnostic Radiology”, about the pioneers of the first 60 years of radiology, André Bruwer says: "It is good to be aware that a procedure being used to aid a patient in Warsow or Bonn was developed in St Louis, or that a method used in New York to clarify a diagnostic problem was first used in Lisbon or Buenos Aires or Paris. Without an awareness of such facts we stand in danger of provincialism. We can only learn to respect each other by knowing more about one another and giving credit where it is due”. This is the purpose of this talk: to describe many innovations introduced by Latin American physicians in the field of radiology that deserve a universal repercussion. To achieve this objective we acknowledge that original contributions are those that meant in that moment a real clinical or technical progress. Their importance is measured in connection with the level of knowledge of its time, although sometimes the ulterior medical progress has invalidated or relegated its conclusions. When we consider what our predecessors did with the crude instruments at their disposal, we must pause in awe at their imagination, their enterprise, and their accomplishments. In this way, we will pay tribute to the achievements of the Latin American pioneers.
