The field of oncology is constantly changing, with new chemotherapeutic agents and advances in radiation techniques and interventional techniques allowing patients to live longer lives. It is increasingly important for the radiologist to understand the imaging appearances of the complications of therapy.
This educational exhibit will discuss the complications in the abdomen and pelvis: hepatobiliary, spleen and pancreas, and stomach, small intestine and bowel. Within in each system, the effects of chemotherapy (including the newer agents), radiation therapy and surgical change will be discussed utilizing images from fluoroscopic studies, CT, PET/CT, and MRI. Examples include fistula from VEGF trap inhibitors, post-radiation change in liver, and post-therapeutic fibrosis in the pelvis.
1. This exhibit will familiarize the viewer with the different complications of oncologic therapy in the abdomen and pelvis.
2. This exhibit will allow the viewer to review the imaging appearance of complications on CT and fluoroscopy as well as the newer technologies of PET/CT and MRI.
3. More importantly, the viewer will be able to identify ways to distinguish post-therapeutic appearance from recurrent or metastatic disease.
