PURPOSE/AIM

To illustrate various migrational disorders of the brain and understand the embryological process related to their development.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

1. A brief description of the embryology of neuronal migration and organisation.  2. The relationship of various migrational disorders and stages of development of the cortex . 3. Pictorial review of migrational disorders such as schizencephaly, agyria, neuronal heterotopia, pachygyria and polymigrogyria.

SUMMARY

Migrational disorders are a rare group of congenital malformations of the brain. These disorders can be associated with other malformations of the brain such as agenesis of corpus callosum, absence of septum pellucidum etc., MRI gives excellent contrast between gray and white matter and is the imaging modality of choice. The spectrum of image findings in these groups is determined by the timing of the insult and the understanding of the stages of development of the cortex is therefore vital.
