PURPOSE/AIM

The retroperitoneal space contains components of the lymphatic, vascular, urinary, nervous and musculoskeletal systems that are in close proximity to each other. This combination can make the diagnosis of large masses challenging. The purposes of this exhibit is to teach the anatomy and distinct imaging features of large retroperitoneal masses.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

We will divide the masses based on organ and systems origin and further classify them as benign vs. malignant. With the use of color annotated diagrams and high resolution multiplanar CT and MRI images, the anatomy, imaging features, clinical information and staging of large common and uncommon masses of the retroperitoneal space will be presented. We will also demonstrate challenging cases and described an algorithm to achieve the correct diagnosis or provide a narrower differential diagnosis.

SUMMARY

Common and uncommon large masses of the retroperitoneum include lymphangioma, lipomas, schwannomas, lymphoma, fibrosis, paragangliomas, leiomyosarcoma, germ cell tumors, liposarcomas, adrenal cortical carcinoma, and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Upon completion of this exhibit, the attendee will become familiar with the retroperitoneal space anatomy, radiologic features, and staging of these and others large common and uncommon retroperitoneal space masses required for correct diagnosis.
