PURPOSE/AIM

To construct the most advanced interactive three-dimensional (3D) human brain atlas with structure, vasculature, tractography and function. The atlas that is realistic, comprehensive, very detailed, completely parcellated, fully labeled, spatially consistent, of high resolution, volumetric, stereotactic, extendable, dissectible, and user friendly.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Multiple 3T/7T scans of the same subject were co-registered. Vessel/structure/tract editors and tools for brain cutting in 3D enabling parcellation were developed. Our RSNA09 exhibit “The human brain in 1,002 pieces” is extended in content and functionality, while preserving its interactivity. The cortex, arteries, veins, sinuses, cerebellum, white matter, subcortical structures, tracts, functional areas, functional systems were parcellated into over 2,000 3D components, each labeled with name.

SUMMARY

This exhibit: 1) presents a very detailed, 3D atlas with exploration tools; 2) correlates function with structure-vasculature-tractography; 3) presents deep gyral 3D anatomy; 4) presents functional systems; 5) exploits a novel interaction paradigm “from blocks to brain”; 6) demonstrates interactivity feasibility for a very complex brain model; 7) presents electronic de/composition of cortical areas; 8) presents 3D brain in stereo; 9) enhances understanding of the 3D brain just in a few clicks.
