Radiology residents have traditionally maintained a case log for procedures performed during training. The ACGME in fact requires trainees to document procedure logs. These have come in a variety of formats ranging from written notebooks to spreadsheets. A user-friendly database program for residents and fellows to maintain their procedure logs would provide an alternative method of recording this information in an efficient and more functional format.
We have created a robust database application designed to log procedures performed by radiology trainees. This program was created using Filemaker, but is packaged as a self-contained application that is both PC and Mac OS compatible with no additional software required. Online and smartphone interfaces are also in development. The application was developed using experienced gained by one of the authors in creating an electronic logbook used by radiology trainees in the UK. The case log is customizable and features powerful search and report generation capabilities. Data can be imported and exported in several formats, including integration with a RIS. The program can be used to log diagnostic exams in addition to procedures. Programs can also tabulate aggregate data from multiple users. The system is currently on trial at our institution.
This electronic logbook provides many advantages over other methods of documenting procedures. The user-friendly interface allows for rapid data entry with extensive use of drop-down menus and auto-entered fields. The data is also password protected, HIPAA compliant, and portable. Customized reports can be generated to identify any deficiencies in experience for individuals and programs. This system would also ensure ACGME compliance and make documentation readily available when needed.
An electronic case log would be a valuable asset for residents, fellows, and residency programs. This powerful tool allows users to analyze strengths and deficiencies in training and maintain proper documentation. This application is simple to use and readily customizable. This electronic procedure log is currently being evaluated at our institution, and will be made available to others for free.
