PURPOSE/AIM

1. Review the imaging findings for diagnosis of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS). 2. Discuss the technique and role of transcatheter embolization in management of PCS.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

1. Review the incidence, etiology and symptoms of PCS. 2. PCS findings on MRI, the preferred non-invasive imaging study. 3. PCS findings on Ovarian and Internal Iliac Venography. 4. Technique of transcatheter embolization of ovarian and internal iliac veins.

SUMMARY

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, from ovarian and pelvic varices, is difficult to diagnose due to insensitivity of imaging studies and a low clinical suspicion. Venography is the gold standard diagnostic exam. Medical treatment and hysterectomy with/without salpingo-oophorectomy are the traditional therapies, but with inconsistent results. Transcatheter embolotherapy of ovarian& internal iliac veins provides significant symptomatic improvement, successfully avoiding surgery and premature menopause.
