1. Review the classification, epidemiology, pathology, clinical features and imaging characteristics of pulmonary infections leading to necrosis of lung tissue.
2. Define and classify pulmonary abscesses, necrotizing pneumonia and lung gangrene.
3. Create a practical framework for radiologic diagnosis and work-up.
1. Classification of necrotizing pulmonary infections
2. Epidemiology
3. Pathology
4. Imaging presentation
5. Differential diagnosis of lung abscesses, necrotizing pneumonias, lung gangrene, infected bullae and other cavitating lesions.
In spite of modern antibiotic therapy, pulmonary abscesses, necrotizing pneumonia and lung gangrene persist and lead to significant morbidity and mortality in ambulatory and hospitalized patients.
Radiographic diagnosis contributes significantly to the management of these patients, facilitates differential diagnosis and expedites treatment.
