CONCLUSION

Podcasting provides a convenient model for distributing educational lecture content, makes educational content mobile, and supports anywhere, anytime learning. Educational poster also will include a video demonstration of our internal iTunes U website creation and content, descriptive methods on lecture creation and multiple references for podcasting implementation.

DISCUSSION

Podcasting is a relatively new online broadcasting technology with unique characteristics that may prove valuable in resident education. It is an online publication and technology that is defined as the process of capturing, distributing, and downloading general multimedia productions. Once these educational files are created, they can be easily uploaded to an institution’s iTunes U website. Apple freely provides guidelines designed to help create or update an effective iTunes U site. Podcast technology available via iTunes U holds promise as an inexpensive method to disseminate educational materials rapidly within an institution. A podcast can consist of something as simple as case images with accompanying data or as complex as a full-length educational video production. A great advantage of video-on-demand technology is its viewing flexibility, giving the users the ability to choose exactly what, where and when they want to learn. Other advantages include the capacity for a variety of video, audio, and image media; the ease of dissemination; and the availability of multiple viewing platforms, so the user is not tied to a computer to review content. Educational content easily can be transferred to any computer and to a multitude of mobile media devices available today, such as iPhones and iPods among others. For residency programs, access can be limited only to members of an institution with a password-protected iTunes U site. Because administrative access is integrated with Apple ID, it is easy to set up and manage your site.
