PURPOSE/AIM

1. Review anatomy seen on the lateral chest film 2. Learn the location of common lesions on lateral chest film 3. Develop a systematic approach for review of the lateral film 4. Learn to routinely localize findings on both projections

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Normal Anatomy-Review key imaging anatomy with cross-sectional imaging and gross anatomy correlation. Quiz Format Case Presentation-Lateral films are shown and the user is prompted to select the best corresponding frontal chest x-ray.  Sample cases include: sternal fracture and tumor, thymoma, aberrant subclavian, dilated esophagus, pericardial effusions, pneumomediastinum, pneumonia, nodule, and aortic aneurysm. Discussion-Key anatomy points are highlighted in case discussions.

SUMMARY

Failure to utilize information on the lateral chest radiograph results in suboptimal interpretation of available information and potentially leads to unnecessary cross-sectional imaging.  Upon completion of this teaching module the user will have learned key teaching points to improve diagnostic accuracy in the interpretation of chest radiographs.  Abnormalities seen only on the lateral films will also be presented.
