PURPOSE/AIM

The purpose of this exhibit is: 1. To review the current concepts of the endometriosis. 2. To discuss the role of ultrasound and MRI and imaging protocols. 3. To present examples of imaging findings of deeply infiltrating endometriosis in multiple sites. 4. Correlation of imaging findings with laparoscopic and histological confirmed cases.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

1. Current concepts of endometriosis, including etiology, pathofisiology, clinical aspects and surgical treatment. 2. Transvaginal ultrasound and MR protocols with bowel preparation. 3. Examples of deeply infiltrating endometriosis in multiple sites, with laparoscopic and histological correlation. 4. Algorithm for endometriosis evaluation.

SUMMARY

The major teaching points of this exhibits are: 1. Review the current concepts of endometriosis. 2. Transvaginal ultrasound and MRI with bowel preparation are the best imaging modalities for endometriosis evaluation. 3. The most common imaging findings in deeply infiltrating endometriosis are spiculated nodules with hypointensity signal on T2-weighted images. 4. Small intestinal lesions are best seen on transvaginal ultrasound.
