PURPOSE/AIM

To appreciate the emerging role of radiologic evaluation of recently FDA approved gastric banding devices. To understand device placement, normal position, potential postsurgical complications and the use of fluoroscopy to detect them.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Gross and radiologic appearance of FDA approved gastric banding devices Laproscopic procedure for device placement Plain film evaluation and fluoroscopic techniques for post operative evaluation of gastric bands Review imaging findings of postoperative complications (plain films and fluoroscopy)

SUMMARY

Laproscopically placed gastric banding devices are gaining popularity as an alternative to Roux en Y gastric bypass for the management of obesity.  It is important for radiologists to be able to adequately evaluate these devices and diagnose complications. The major teaching points of this exhibit are:  1.Gastric band placement and in situ appearance.  2. Radiologic techniques for evaluating and adjusting gastric bands.  3. Appearance of postoperative complications
