PURPOSE

We used arterial embolization with N-2-butil Cyanoacrylate not only for painful metastases in which surgical treatment was impossible but also for helping a following surgical treatment. We report our results.

METHOD AND MATERIALS

From January 1993 to January 2009, 194 patients presenting with painful bone metastases were treated (118 males and 76 females, age 20-87). Fourty three patients had more than one embolization (for a recurrence in the same location) for a total of 255 examinations performed. One hundred and twelve metastases were located in the pelvis, 65 in the spine, 9 in the superior limb, 33 in the lower limb, 18 in the thoracic cage. The primary tumor was from urogenital system (113 ), breast (23 ), GI system (29 ), thyroid (22 ), lung(21 ), skeletal system (6 ), skin ( 3), nervous system ( 9), and at last unkonwn origin (29). After informed consent the embolization was always carried out by transfemoral catheterism.

RESULTS

A complete or significative reduction of the pain which lasted for months, was obtained in 97 per cent of the cases. When the patients undergone more than one embolization because of a local recurrence of the lesion a resumption of the painful symptomatology like that at the beginning was never observed. For the patients with limb location a very good improvment of mobility was obtained. Only one complication (a transient skin and subcutaneous necrosis) occurred after multiple embolizations of pelvis metastases of a a paraganglioma.

CONCLUSION

This palliative and safe treatment is effective in controling the pain of bone metastases.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE/APPLICATION

Arterial embolization with N-2-butil Cyanoacrylate is a palliative and safe treatment, effective in controling the pain of bone metastases.
