PURPOSE/AIM

The aim of this scientific exhibit is to acquaint the viewer with the many variations of development, position and disease entities that may involve the appendix beyond that of routine acute appendicitis.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

 Abnormal Development/Position: Fetal appendix and abnormal positions such as subhepatic and in Amyand's hernia Atypical Inflammatory Conditions: Cases secondary to Crohn disease, in Amyand's hernia, secondary to colon tumors and appendicolith secondary to foreign body. Tumor/Tumor-like Conditions: Mucoceles (infected/non-infected), endometriosis, carcinoid tumors and missed appendicitis presenting years later as a mass. Other: Diverticulosis, intussusception  

SUMMARY

After viewing this exhibit, the radiologist should be more familiar with the normal and abnormal development of the appendix and how this can affect the imaging of that organ as well as many of the varied pathologies that can affect it.
