PURPOSE/AIM

To review the radiographical and CT anatomy of mediastinal lines and stripes and cardiac silhouette. To explain the relationship between chest diseases and mediastinal lines, stripes and cardiac silhouette concepts. To help to identify the CXR abnormal appearances to perform differential diagnosis prior to obtaining information with chest-CT.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Describe the anatomy of mediastinal lines on Chest X-Ray Describe the anatomy of cardiac silhouette on Chest X-Ray Relationship of lung and mediastinal diseases to mediastinal lines, stripes and cardiac silhouette. Relationship of X-Ray and CT findings. Review of Imaging Findings - Conventional X-Ray and MDCT; - Sample cases and differential diagnoses. Summary and literature.

SUMMARY

The major teaching points of this exhibit are: 1-to be helpful for young trainees for their daily routine chest imaging activity 2-to illustrate the CXR and CT imaging correlation of the mediastinal lines, stripes and cardiac silhouette concepts 3- the knowledge and the capability to recognize the thickening, displacement or deletion of one of these mediastinal lines or stripes as well as the presence/absence of the cardiac silhouette finding support the appropriate request of chest CT.
