PURPOSE/AIM

• To review the spectrum of appendicular pathology beyond acute appendicitis including congenital, infective, inflammatory and neoplastic entities • To review the role of imaging in characterization of appendicular disease entities and its implications on management • To discuss evolving concepts related to mucocele of appendix

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

• Introduction • Classification of appendicular pathology • CT & MRI protocols and ultrasound techniques for imaging of the appendix • Congenital anomalies of appendix • Infective and inflammatory conditions of appendix • Epithelial and nonepithileal appendicluar neoplasms • Mucoceles - classification, imaging features, prognostic, and therapeutic implications: Current thinking and evolving concepts related to mucoceles and pseudomyxoma peritonei

SUMMARY

Appendicular diseases beyond acute appendicitis account for less than 1% of appendectomy specimens. We present appendicular pathologies including diverticula, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, carcinoid, lymphoma, adenoma, adenocarcinoma & mucocele. Accurate recognition of imaging appearance of these entities is critical given the implications in management. Current classification of mucoceles includes simple mucocele, low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm and mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma.
