1. To illustrate the anatomy of the various compartments in the neck
2. To know the common structures traversing the deep neck spaces
3. To have knowledge of common tumors, infections and congenital conditions occurring in the various neck spaces.
4. To understand routes of communication and pathways of spread of disease.
1. Three dimensional cross-sectional anatomy of neck spaces showing CT/MR and cadaver sections along with line diagrams.
2. Imaging features of common pathologies including tumours, infection and congenital malformations are shown.
3. Pathways of spread of disease along various compartments are illustrated with clinical and surgical correlation in mind.
4. Concise systematic approach to the deep neck spaces is summarized in a table.
The cervical region has a complex anatomical structure subdivided by fascial planes. Deep neck infections and tumors infiltrate by these routes into anatomical spaces and often require different surgical procedures. Some invade the mediastinum and skull base which has a poor prognosis. It is relatively easy to diagnose deep neck pathologies if we adopt a systematic approach. It is therefore very important to evaluate the fascial planes and compartments accurately for appropriate treatment.
