1. Review of the pathophysiology, epidemiology, signs/symptoms, and long term complications of FMD. 2. Role of duplex sonography, CT angiography, MRA and conventional angiography in diagnosis. 3. Discussion of management options and their outcomes for renal and carotid artery FMD, focusing on the current role of endovascular therapy.
1: Pathophysiology, epidemiology, classification of subtypes, clinical signs/symptoms, and long term complications of FMD
2: Review of imaging findings in duplex sonography, CTA/MRA and conventional angiography
3: Sample cases of renal and carotid FMD, including differentiation from atherosclerotic disease
4: Management options and outcomes, including case examples
Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is an uncommon, progressive vasculopathy which primarily affects young women and commonly involves medium-sized vessels, most often the renal and carotid arteries. Advances in non-invasive imaging now permit earlier diagnosis and treatment of symptomatic patients. This session will focus on the current role of diagnostic imaging and endovascular therapy in the prevention of long term sequelae due to FMD.
