PURPOSE/AIM

To show the spectrum of postprocessing techniques available to display datasets from CT or MR imaging; To discuss advantages, disadvantages and pitfalls for each technique; To illustrate the most relevant scenarios that benefit from these techniques.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Title: "MPR, MIP, MinIP, VR, SR, SSD: Beyond the alphabet soup" Discussion on the impact of new technologies that resulted in an increased number of images per patient who undergoes CT or MR scanning; Detailed Illustrated explanation of the following postprocessing techniques: Multiplanar reformatting (including curved - both manual and automatic - and the "magic carpet view), Maximum and minimum intensity projection , Volume and Surface Rendering, and Shaded Surface Display

SUMMARY

Display of information from an ever increasing number of images from patients undergoing CT or MR imaging is challenging. Use of postprocessing techniques becomes a key tool to increase reading efficiency and to improve communication with referring physicians. After viewing this exhibit, attendees will be able to (1) understand the principles governing generation of images with each postprocessing techniques, (2) identify scenarios that benefit from them, and (3) recognize potential pitfalls.
