PURPOSE/AIM

The purpose of this exhibit is 1. To review the basic cross sectional anatomy of the face. 2. To familiarize the reader with the different types of common non-traumatic facial emergencies for which imaging is obtained. 3. To define an approach to the diagnosis using clinical information and imaging modality being used.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

1. Infection from tooth leading to a.Submandibular space infection b.Ludwigs angina 2. Infection from salivary glands a.Parotid and Submandibular sialadenitis b.Sialolithiasis 3.Infection of maxillofacial pathologies, a.Dentigerous,Orthokeratocyst or Palatal cyst infection b.Infection occuring in facial tumors 4.Others a.Necrotising fascitis b.Oro-antral communication after extraction c.TMJ dislocation d.Bleeding from oral carcinomas

SUMMARY

1. The most common non-traumatic facial emergencies are due to infection. 2.Uncommonly complications from malignancies can also present as acute facial swellings.
