Functional MR imaging is expected for an objective olfaction test, but odor stimulation during MR examination is not easy to perform. The purpose of this study is to establish the convenient olfactory functional MR imaging with intravenous odor stimulation using thiamine propyldisulfide (Alinamin), which may apply to dysomia/anosmia patients.
Fifteen normal volunteers (twelve males, three females, mean age, 25.7 years; range 22-40 years) were included in this study and underwent gradient echo planner functional MR imaging (TR/TE: 3000/40msec, 4mm slice thickness, 64 x 64 matrix). All volunteers underwent two sets of functional MR imaging, and each examination obtained three times of intravenous stimulation with thiamine propyldisulfide. We supposed 64 patterns of hemodynamic response function (HRF);onset 0,1,2,,,7TR, duration 0,1,2,,,7TR, because we do not know the optimized HRF. Each HRF was analyzed individually and all data were used for group analysis (P<0.005).
Brain activation was noted at the region of olfactory related areas, such as frontal lobes, perisylvian regions, cingulate gyri, cerebellum, and thalamus. These activations were showed in the HRF of onset 1TR, duration 2,3,4,5TR, and onset 2TR, duration 1,2TR which means we need to analyze the data of 6 to 12 seconds after injection of intravenous odor stimulant agent.
Olfactory funtional MR imaging using intravenous odor stimulation can be a convenient objective olfaction test.
Intravenous odor stimulating functional MR imaging can be an objective olfaction test, which may apply to anosmia/dysosmia patients.
