To discuss and illustrate using pathological correlation, the large spectrum of diseases with thickening of the gallbladder wall.
1. Radioanatomy of gallbladder and gallbladder wall.
2. Illustration using US, CT and MRI with pathological correlation of thickened wall gallbladder in benign conditions: adenomyomatosis, acute and chronic cholecystitis, cholesterolosis...
3. Illustration of thickened wall gallbladder in malignant conditions
4. Thickened wall gallbladder with a cause extrinsic to the biliary tract: ascites, acute hepatitis, sepsis...
5. Discussion of mimics and alternate diagnosis.
Thickening of the gallbladder wall may result from a large spectrum of pathological conditions, intrinsic as well as extrinsic to the biliary tract.
Accurate diagnosis is usually established after a correlation of imaging findings, laboratory data and clinical history.
US remains the initial imaging modality for the evaluation of acute right upper quadrant pain. CT and MRI are complementary to US and have an increasing role in assessing a thickened-wall gallbladder.
