PURPOSE/AIM

To describe and demonstrate the CT findings of incidentally found breast disorders on chest CT.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Although CT has been shown to be highly useful diagnostic tool in detecting, characterizing and following thoracic abnormalities, its use in detecting breast disorders is limited. Recently, faster CT scanner with thinner collimation and various reformation tools can provide detect breast lesions and differentiate malignant lesions from benign. Even routine chest CT, some breast lesions can be detected incidentally. So chest radiologists should be aware of CT findings of breast lesions.

SUMMARY

From Jan. 2003 to Dec. 2006, total 3,992 chest CT scans were performed in 2,730 consecutive women with various causes. A total of 27 breast lesions were detected, 23 of malignant, and 3 of benign. Except 4, 23 patients didn’t know of their breast lesions, prior to CT, regardless of the tumor size. In conclusion, features of incidentally found breast disorders on chest CT were asymmetric mass shadows, or enhancing masses. These CT findings can help to detect breast disorders.
