PURPOSE/AIM

Radiologists are often asked if a study is “positive” or “negative,” however many studies can not be interpreted in such a simple manner. Sensitivity, specificity, ROC curves, and positive and negative predictive values must be understood when interpreting a study. We developed a learning module to help radiologists better understand statistic

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Interactive quiz that teaches about statistical concepts using real-world examples encountered on a daily basis in radiology departments. Examples include: what to do with 3mm pulmonary nodules, whether to treat a 4.5cm abdominal aortic aneurysm, what does a “low probability” VQ scan mean. Statistical parameters for each case will be presented, along with a discussion of interpretation in clinical practice.

SUMMARY

Radiology is evolving into a field with an increased emphasis on evidenced-based practice. Radiologists must understand the properties required of a screening test versus a confirmation exam. Depending upon the sensitivity and specificity desired from a given test, thresholds of interpretation will vary. An educational module using radiology-based examples is a beneficial teaching tool for statistical concepts that radiologists must understand to provide clinically relevant results.
