PURPOSE/AIM

The aim of this exhibit is: 1. to review and illustrate the CT and MR imaging features of typical and atypical TB spondylitis.2. to describe the CT and MR findings of early and advanced cases of the disease.3. to differentiate TB spondylitis from other diseases.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

1.The typical and atypical features of TB spondylitis are reviewed and illustrated with CT and MRI. 2. Calcification of the soft tissue; reactive sclerosis; vertebral body collapse; gibbus deformity and vertebral body fusion are the findings of the advanced cases of TB spondylitis. 3. Differentiation of TB spondylitis from other diseases of the spine with CT and MRI is difficult in atypical cases.

SUMMARY

Skeletal manifestations of TB have been discovered in the remanains of preistoric man. Spinal tuberculosis still remains endemic in most of the developing countries. We review the typical and atypical imaging characteristics of spinal tuberculosis and describe the course of the disease by CT and MR imaging . We discuss the need of CT- guided needle aspiration or biopsy speciments in atypical cases.
