Only one published study has fully described the typical findings of implant-related osteolysis of the acetabulum at CT. The purpose of this exhibit is to demonstrate the varied CT findings of focal osteolysis following total hip replacement; the viewer should be better able to interpret and report the findings in these cases.
After a brief discussion of CT technique, the poster will review typical findings of osteolysis and provide sufficient examples, followed by a review of the classification systems for osteolysis, with emphasis on important findings for radiologists to make.
CT scanning can help to make the diagnosis of osteolysis, but to the uninitiated, the CT findings may be confusing and even raise the question of malignancy. Findings to be described at CT scans include the number, size, shape, and location of lucencies as well as associated soft tissue masses and fluid collections, cortical disruption, and polyethylene liner wear. The classification systems for describing these findings will be reviewed.
