1. To familiarize the radiologist to the hypothesis that Randall’s plaque, predisposes patients to becoming calcium oxalate stone formers.
2. To correlate ureteroscopic findings of Randall’s plaque with CT and Ultrasound.
3.Describe Radiological Appearances.
1. Review the Anatomy of Loop of Henle and the Renal papilla.
2. Description of the Pathogenesis of Randall’ plaque and association with calcium urinary stones.
3. Presentation of the Imaging appearance of Randall’s plaque on CT / and US and with ureteroscopic correlation.
The most commonly occurring urinary stones are comprised of calcium oxalate. Evidence suggests that the development of calcium oxalate stones may be associated with Randall’s plaques,a hydroxyapatite plaque located on the renal papillae. There is overgrowth of calcium oxalate or calicum phosphate and leads to formation of stones. Recognition of this entity by the radiologist may help to identify potential stone formers and aid in understanding pathogenesis of stone formation.
