PURPOSE/AIM

This educational exhibit on lung transplantation aims to cover the following aspects: a) the immediate and late medical and surgical complications; b) histopathological correlation where applicable; c) complementary role of radiology and other diagnostic methods such as bronchoscopy and histopathology.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

A pictorial review of a) an understanding of the pathophysiology of lung transplantation complications; b) the imaging of immediate and late medical and surgical complications, including the development of malignancies; c) the complications of the native lung in single lung transplants; d) the histopathology where applicable; e) with examples to illustrate the strengths and weakness of radiology and the importance of team work between the radiologist, the medical team and the pathologist

SUMMARY

Lung transplant is an established procedure for chronic end stage lung diseases. An understanding of the wide spectrum of medical and surgical complications, their temporal evolution and the complementary role of radiology and other diagnostic methods such as bronchoscopy/histopathology in the detection of these complications, is of paramount importance in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with this procedure.
