PURPOSE/AIM

Hydatid disease is endemic in our country, so classical findings are well known; however, there are many potential complications, less described in literature. The aim of this study is to show the imaging findings in US, TC and MRI of complicated hydatid cyst (HC) and unusual presentations.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

A retrospective study of 485 patients with hydatid cysts performed in our hospital from January 1999 until January 2007 is reported. The imaging findings of patients with HC were reviewed from our database and those who presented complications were selected. All patients were studied with plain films, ultrasonography and computed tomography. Magnetic resonance and other examinations were performed in selected patients. Findings were correlated with pathology (biopsy or surgery) in all the cases.

SUMMARY

58 patients of our study presented complications (12%): rupture and infection(40%),exophytic growth(12%),transdiafragmatic thoracic involvement(12%),peritoneal seeding(15%),biliary comunication(24%),portal involvement(6%) and hematogenous dissemination(24%). Because many of these disorders have characteristic imaging appearances, this exhibit will help practicing radiologist to better understand, recognize and differentiate complications of HC, specially important in endemic countries.
