PURPOSE/AIM

1. Study of the normal anatomy and standard technique for anatomical snuffbox sonographic exploration. 2. Diagnosis by means of ultrasound of the most frequent diseases that cause pain in this location.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

Review of the normal sonographic anatomy of the snuffbox components. Description of the diseases that characteristically affects this compartment: arthropathies: rhizarthrosis, inflammatory arthritis tendon disorders: De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, tendon failure bone lesions: scaphoid occult fracture, pseudoarthrosis soft-tissue masses: ganglia, lipomas, pseudoaneurysms, arterio-venous fistulas, neuromas

SUMMARY

The anatomical snuff box is a triangular space on the radial and dorsal aspect of the hand, at the level of the carpal bones, which is delimited and occupied by different structures (tendons, bones, vessels and nerves). The occurrence of selective pain at the snuffbox is a daily cause of medical consultation. High resolution ultrasound can provide a useful information and improves clinical diagnosis.
