PURPOSE/AIM

To illustrate the advantage of using a broad window width in the detection of aberrant air on abdominal CT scans.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

First will be given a short overview of the theory and use of window settings. A broad window width leads to the facilitated detection of aberrant air configurations - especially when the air borders on fatty tissues. Second, aberrant air in the following abdominal compartments will be addressed and illustrated, using a broad range of cases: - Free intraperitoneal and retroperitoneal air - Pneumatosis Intestinalis - Intraparenchymal air - Air in soft tissues

SUMMARY

Using a broad window-width is a valuable tool in the detection of aberrant air on abdominal CT.
