PURPOSE/AIM

To review the CT and MR imaging features of Unusual Rectal masses in adults with histopathological correlation. To be familiar with the various pathology related to the rectum especially in the presacral region.

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

- Clinical presentation of rectal masses. - Anatomy of rectum wall and presacralspace - Pathology of unusual masses involving the rectum (classified by different layers of the rectal wall) - CT and MR imaging features of some unusual rectal masses such as Lipoma,Duplication cyst ( with malignant degeneration ),Tailgut cyst,Mucinous adenocarcinoma,Haemangiopericytoma,Leiomyosarcoma and rectal abscess (secondary to Crohn's disease). - Other mimics ( presacral lesions )

SUMMARY

The most common Rectal mass encountered in regular clinical practice is adenocarcinoma, however it is important to be familiar with uncommon pathology involving the rectum. MR imaging is very useful in further evaluation of Unusual Rectal masses. It can help to elucidate the pathology of these masses and their local extent , thus aiding in appropriate further clinical management.
