PURPOSE/AIM

Understand how axial load, flexion and extension imaging of the Lumbar Spine has the ability to uncover pathology not appreciated on supine spinal imaging Demonstrate the morphologic differences in a degenerated disc when physiologic versus non-physiologic conditions are applied. Understand the protocol development with respect to pulse sequences

CONTENT ORGANIZATION

MR imaging of the spine is routinely performed for back pain and sciatica. Frequently, however, the patients symptoms do not correlate with the imaging findings. We will describe a simple method for obtaining both axial load and dynamic neutral, flexion and extension imaging utilizing our interventional MRI. Disc morphologic changes and foraminal stenotic changes compared with supine imaging will be discussed. We will also reveal the pulse sequences used, the study time and equipment set up.

SUMMARY

After viewing this exhibit, the reader should be familiar with the setup and technique we use for dynamic imaging of the lumbar spine along with the difference in imaging findings expected when physiologic loading is present versus supine imaging.
