To evaluate the role played by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in sponsoring research in radiology.
The National Library of Medicine’s Pubmed database was searched for articles published by U.S. institutions from 1996 to 2005 containing the keyword “Radiolog” in the author affiliation field. For each citation, methodology, year of publication, and disclosure of NIH grant support was noted. Linear regression curve estimation was used to test for trend.
30,156 articles were identified from 1,582 journals. The NIH funded 25.47% of general journal articles, 28.36% of clinical trials, and 18.58% of articles overall. The proportion of U.S. articles supported by the NIH increased by 5.19% annually for multicenter trials (P<0.0005), 3.53% annually for clinical trials overall (P<0.0005) and 1.11% annually (P<0.0005) for all articles. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored the most articles (2,505) with a rate of increase of 13.5 articles annually (P = 0.003). The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (1030 articles sponsored, 4.65 articles/year growth, P=0.012) and National Center for Research Resources (915 articles sponsored, 7.92 articles/year growth, P<0.0005) were also large supporters. The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) has the most rapid growth (320 articles sponsored, 43.7 articles/year growth, P = 0.01)
The NIH funds an increasing proportion of U.S. radiology research. The NCI sponsors the most published radiology research of all the NIH institutes, but sponsorship from the NIBIB is increasing rapidly.
The role played by the NIH in supporting U.S. radiology research is increasing.
