PURPOSE

to evaluate the feasibility of diffuse-weighted single shot echo planar imaging employing parallel technique (SENSE-DWI) in preoperative evaluation of endometrial carcinoma

METHOD AND MATERIALS

From Feb. 2005 to Feb. 2006, nineteen patients (41 to 76 years old, mean 54) proved to have endometrial cancer were referred for preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation. The examinations were performed by GE 1.5T Twin EXCITE MR scanner. In addition to routine T2-turbo spin echo (TSE), SENSE-DWI (b factor =0 and 1000) was performed, along with the ADC mapping. The ADC value of tumor and normal endometrium were measured respectively. The diagnostic accuracy for depicting depth of myometrium invasion was also evaluated, as compared with traditional T2-TSE imaging.

RESULTS

On SENSE-DWI, tumor appeared high signal intensity as compared with normal endometrium and myometrium, which was confirmed by the significantly low ADC value of tumor (0.775 ± 0.08 (•10-3) mm²/s) as compared with normal endometrium (1.29 ± 1.5 (•10-3) mm²/s). DWI also added incremental value for the evaluation of myometrial invasion depth to T2 TSE sequence.

CONCLUSION

SENSE-DWI provide significantly high signal contrast between endometrial cancer and myometrium and provide useful information according to preoperative staging.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE/APPLICATION

SENSE-DWI is useful technique for preoperative evaluation of endometrial cancer and a potential method for differentiating benign from malignant endometrial lesion.
