The purpose of this exhibit is:
1. To review the normal anatomy of the femoral intercondylar notch.
2. To demonstrate common abnormalities found in the femoral intercondylar notch.
Anatomy of the intercondylar notch
Normal variants coursing through the intercondylar notch
Shape of intercondylar notch can predict future pathology
Abnormalities within the intercondylar notch
- Cruciate ligament rupture
- Masses (bucket handle meniscal tears, cysts, loose bodies, pigmented villonodular synovitis, arthrofibrosis, and hemangioma)
Radiologic signs can signify abnormalities within the knee
-Double or reverse double PCL sign
-Double ACL sign
The major teaching points of this exhibit are
1. The cruciate ligaments are found in the intercondylar notch.
2. Normal variants may be found in the intercondylar notch: meniscofemoral ligaments, intermeniscal ligament, oblique meniscomeniscal ligament, and infrapatellar plica.
3. Other abnormalities found within the intercondylar notch indicate disorders within the knee joint.
4. Radiologic signs such as double ACL or PCL sign indicate bucket handle tear of the medial or lateral meniscus.
