ABSTRACT

Purpose To identify the criteria and mechanism by which academic radiology departments in the US select their residents. Methods and materials                 In this cross-sectional study, a validated survey covering 27 variables was sent to the program directors of radiology residency programs. Descriptive statistics and correlations were calculated using Fisher-Freeman-Holton exact and Chi-square tests. Results A response rate of 51.2% (63/123) was achieved. All responders participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and 91.8% fill all their positions through it. Filling or not all the positions through the NRMP was significantly different (P< 0.05) among regions of the US. Of the responding programs, 92% follow an interview protocol, usually performed by an interviewing body (95.6%). Program directors and residents/fellows participate in 74.4% and 82.1% of such bodies, respectively. The body has the final word in accepting the candidates in 66.7% of the cases, and the program director in 29.2%. Candidates undergo >3 one-on-one interviews in 83.7% of the programs. 63% of the programs use a checklist. Panel interviews (multiple Interviewers at a time) are performed by 8.2% of the programs. None of these characteristics were significantly different among programs according to size, location, or association with a medical school (P>0.05). Small hospitals are significantly (P<0.05) less likely to use candidates’ class rank as a selection criterion. Conclusion: Radiology residents’ selection criteria in the US are variable. The process includes several steps, most of which are independent of the size, location, and association of the program with a medical school
