LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. To learn the various surgical approaches utilized by Head and Neck Surgeons for temporal bone surgery. 2. To describe the expected CT and MRI appearances seen with the various procedures. 3. To demonstrate radiographically complications which may occur after surgery.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To describe the typical CT and MRI appearance of the post-operative temporal bone. Material and Methods: The surgical database from a major academic institution were reviewed over the past three years for patients undergoing surgery of the temporal bone. Results: Utilizing pictorial diagrams and a bone model, the various proceudures performed on the tympanic, mastoid, and petrous portions of the temporal bone are reviewed with correlative CT and MR images. Post-operative complications which may occur will also be demonstrated. Conclusion: Assessment of the post-operative temporal bone is a difficult task, and many radiologist are not aware of the various types of surgeries which are performed in this region, primarily for neoplasm and inflammation. This exhibit will educate the attendee of the typical CT and MR appearance of the post-operative temporal bone.
