To evaluate the possibility and accuracy of volume estimation of solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) by using dual-exposure dual-energy subtraction digital radiography of the chest
We obtained dual-energy chest radiography (DER) in 22 patients who had SPN. We obtained multi-detector helical CT in these patients within a day, and measured the volume of targeted SPN from volume CT data. We performed weighted log-subtraction dual-energy algorithm to separate soft tissue from bone. We calculated the relative volume of SPN using density projection after background rejection around the SPN by background interpolation in x- and y-direction of detector pixels. We tested the correlation between the CT measured volume and DER estimated volume using linear regression analysis.
CT measured volume of SPNs were from 0.13 cm³ to 16.9 cm³ (mean, 4.4 cm³). DER estimated volume of nodules were from 0.17 cm³ to 16.6 cm³ (mean, 4.6 cm³). The mean relative error was 17% compared to CT measured volume. There was good correlation between DER estimated volume and CT measured volume (Pearson's coefficient = 0.991, p < 0.001).
Dual-energy subtraction chest radiography can be easily applied to computerized volume measurement of lung nodule by eliminating rib shadows with tissue-selective image, and is promising for simple and accurate lung nodule volume estimation.
