PURPOSE

To assess the feasibility and the accuracy of the parametric maps of perfusion calculated on the basis of destruction-replenishment processes with perfluorocarbone based microbubbles in human kidneys.

METHOD AND MATERIALS

Pulse inversion harmonic imaging during continuous injection of 2ml/min SonoVue was used to examine the perfusion of the left kidney in 20 patients without renal problems. Perfusion parameters were calculated by the analysis of replenishment kinetics and displayed as parametric maps calculated with dedicated software. Parametric maps obtained with contrast ultrasound were compared to perfusion maps obtained with contrast enhanced CT.

RESULTS

Measurement of the replenishment kinetic was achieved in 17 of 20 patients. The drawing up of sonographic-based perfusion maps was possible in 12 of these 17 patients. All of these sonographic-based perfusion maps were closely similar to CT-based perfusion maps.

CONCLUSION

Measurement of the replenishment kinetics on kidney is technically difficult, because the depth and the movements of this organ. Once acquired, the data may be used to generate perfusion maps. These maps are closely similar to those of perfusion-CT.
