1. To describe indications for dynamic musculoskeletal ultrasound.
2. To demonstrate imaging of various musculoskeletal pathologies that are best or only demontrated with dynamic ultrasound.
3. To highlight the utility of dynamic ultrasound in the management of musculoskeletal pathology.
Musculoskeletal ultrasonography (US) is rapidly evolving and growing in popularity. Its advantages of low cost, availability, non-invasiveness, and multiplanar capability are well-known. One of its most important diagnostic advantage even over other modalities is its capability of real-time studies, allowing for dynamic imaging. Some disorders of muscles, tendons, nerves, and joints are best or only demonstrated dynamically, that is, during motion, muscle contraction, probe compression, or position change of the patient. With the increasing breadth of clinical indications for musculoskeletal US, an increasing number of applications of dynamic US are being discovered. In this pictorial essay, we illustrate the utility of dynamic US to diagnose a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including ones of tendons, muscles, nerves, soft tissue masses, and joints.
