To compare 3D TOF MRA of coiled anerysms at 3T with 3D TOF MRA and ultrafast CE MRA at 1.5T
Twenty-three patients treated with detachable coils for cerebral aneurysms undewent examinations at 3T and 1.5T separated by 24 hours. 3D TOF MRA at 3T was performed with a head T/R coil and an axial acquisition (TR/TE=23/3.2). At 1.5T, a sensitivity encoding head coil was used; a 3D TOF axial acquisition was performed first(SENSE factor 2, TR/TE=23/3.6), followed by an axial 3D ultrafast (23 sec) gradient-echo sequence (SENSE factor 2, TR/TE=6.1/2.1) enhanced with 0.1 mmol/kg Gd-BOPTA (Multihance). Source images as well as MIP and SSD reconstructions targeted on the vessel of interest were evaluated.
Twenty-four aneurysms were evaluated. The presence of coil artefact was equally evident on 3D TOF at 3T and 1.5T but was not apparent on CE MRA.
The parent artery was idetifiable in 22 cases after 3D TOF MRA at 3T and CE MRA at 1.5T but in only 20 cases after 3D TOF MRA at 1.5T. Patency of the residual anerysm was demonstrated in 9 cases after 3D TOF MRA at 1.5T, but in 12 cases after 3D TOF MRA at 3T and CE MRA at 1.5T; in each case CE MRA permitted superior demonstration of residual patency. Comparison of the 3D TOF acuisitions revealed higher signal and a sharper definition of the parent vessel and residual patency at 3T.
MRA follow-up of coiled anerysms is feasible at 3T and is better then at 1.5T; nevertheless greater definition of residual patency is achieved with ultrafast CE MRA at 1.5T.
