Pervasive computing is frequently mentioned as a technology that can significantly impact the healthcare sector and the delivery of healthcare. Although some experience exists with pervasive systems for medication, order entry and charge capture, there is very limited experience with true pervasive computing involving the daily workflow of the radiologist. This case study involves the use of a system that offers full PACS/RIS functionality in a pervasive computing environment. Radiologists using the system over extended periods of time as part of their daily workflow are surveyed regarding their perceptions and experiences with the method.
Pervasive computing devices used include traditional workstations, common PCs/laptops, projection display systems, and wireless/mobile PDAs.
Four radiologists employ a PACS/RIS system that offers roaming and collaboration (pervasive computing) over a period of a month as part of the daily workflow in the radiology department of a university hospital. The radiologists are surveyed following the study period regarding perceptions and experiences regarding the method.
The results of the pervasive computing study are presented along with the following analyses.
1. General experiences with the method, including any unusual positive or negative occurrences.
2. Subjective impacts of the method on the efficiency and effectiveness of various tasks, including consultations, patient communication, reporting and overall workflows.
The case study documents the experience of a group of radiologists in the use of a pervasive-computing-enabled PACS/RIS system. General and subjective conclusions are formulated regarding pervasive computing in the radiology department, along with presentation of significant incidents and experiences.
