LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.To illustrate an easy bony-landmark based approach for ankle ultrasound. 2.To give an overview of normal joints, ligaments and tendons. 3.To illustrate the spectum of traumatic injury of the ankle with emphasis on joints, ligaments, and tendons.

ABSTRACT

Bony landmarks are demonstrated for systematic use in assessment of anterior, posterior, and medial and lateral ankle ligaments and tendons. Correlations with dry specimens, anatomic slices, and MR are used for this purpose.Patient cases were obtained from 400 teaching files from 3 institutions. Ligament trauma involving the anterior tibiofibular ligament, anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, and deltoid ligament is ilustrated. Tendon trauma includes discussion of Achilles tendon, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum, flexor hallucis longus, peroneus longus and brevis, and tibialis anterior. Pitfalls and different types of tears are illustrated.
