1. To illustrate the key anatomical boundaries on ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the definition of neck lymph node levels as defined by the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS).
2. To enhance consistent communication between radiologists and treating clinicians.
The management of head and neck cancer requires a multi-disciplinary approach. The anatomical location of lymph nodes of the neck were defined in 2002 by the AAO-HNS. In order to achieve consistency between specialties within the multi-disciplinary team and between treatment centres subsequent guidelines have been published which translate the surgically defined AAO-HNS levels into levels I to VI which are applicable to radiological imaging. Definition of disease within these levels is paramount to the planning of radiotherapy and surgery. Current understanding of the accurate distinction of these levels on cross-sectional imaging amongst radiologists is variable. We present a pictorial review of the US, CT and MRI boundaries, which define the lymph node levels in the neck to reinforce this vital knowledge.
