Refresher Courses

Presented as part of RC415: Categorical Course in Diagnostic Radiology: Breast Imaging—Breast Ultrasound: Performance and Interpretation

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1) Identify benign lesions on breast US. 2) Discuss which features of cystic lesions should prompt aspiration or biopsy. 3) Discuss proposed criteria for lesions identified on baseline US that may be appropriate for short-interval follow-up.

ABSTRACT

Ultrasound is used routinely for diagnostic evaluation of palpable and nonpalpable breast masses, and is being explored as a supplemental screening test after mammography. From a patient perspective, the critical issue in management is whether a finding merits biopsy or not. Importantly, the sonographic classification of lesions as benign or probably benign requires not only the absence of suspicious features, but also the presence of specific benign features. This session will explore proposed criteria for characterizing findings as benign or probably benign on breast sonography.
