Refresher Courses

Presented on November 29, 2005
Presented as part of RC415: Categorical Course in Diagnostic Radiology: Breast Imaging—Breast Ultrasound: Performance and Interpretation

Participants

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1) Understand operator dependence of breast US. 2) Learn techniques for optimizing performance, avoiding diagnostic pitfalls, and correlating breast US with mammography. 3) Be familiar with US depiction of breast anatomy. 4) Be able to apply principles of feature analysis to assessment and management of breast lesions using standardized terminology (BI-RADS: US).

ABSTRACT

Breast ultrasound (US) has been used for decades for cyst-solid differentiation and more recently for solid lesion characterization. In the past, breast US has been limited by availability of high resolution, high quality equipment, inconsistent scanning technique, unfamiliarity with US breast anatomy, and lack of a standardized system for interpretation and reporting. These limitations of breast US are addressed in this course, in which equipment needs will be discussed, ways to optimize the performance of breast US will be suggested, breast anatomy will be reviewed, and the BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System-Ultrasound, American College of Radiology, 2003)feature categories and descriptors for use in lesion assessment and management will be presented.
